Get Free Audiobooks

I've been an audiobook junkie since the days when your audiobooks came in a shoebox on a gazillion cassette tapes. Next audiobooks came in a smaller box with a dozen CDs. No matter what the media, I always managed to lose at least one of the set, or I'd scratch a CD.  Grrr. Thank God for the digital age! Today I consume audiobooks on three devices: my Sony Walkman, my Microsoft Zune, and my Android phone. By far the Android phone has the best interface; but it's such a ridiculous battery hog that I can't listen for very long before I'm forced to swap the phone battery. Drain!

There are two easy ways to get Audiobooks:  Audible.com, and my local library. Most people have figured out Audible; it's been around for over a decade and it's solid and reliable. I had a conversation the other day that made me realize not everyone has figured out how fabulous your local library can be for obtaining audiobooks (and ebooks, too).

Here's how it works:Go to your local library's Web site -- you DO have a library card, don't you? If not, GET ONE. Your library is your best friend.
Find the link to the section: it'll say "Downloadables" or "emedia" or something like that -- you want "Overdrive."Get into the "Overdrive" section -- it's a magical place where all manner of audiobooks and ebooks can be found.Shop! Select what you desire. Most libraries limit your total checkout of digital media to 10 or 12 items at a time. The nice thing is that they just expire -- you never need to worry about returning them. (Which means you never face a late fee!)Install the Overdrive Console to your PC or Mac -- you can't add media to a smaller device (or your phone) directly from the Web site; you need to download the file and then transfer it.Checkout times: Overdrive allows 7, 14, or 21 days. For audiobooks, 7 days is plenty -- because once you've transferred it to an offline devlce (like a Zune or Walkman) you can listen whenever you want. Try it -- audiobooks rule.
